Your question was a good topic for a tutorial, so please see my full answer here: http://blog.spiralgraphics.biz/2010/07/cre...e-patterns.html

Here's the texture I created:

A link to where the GTX can be downloaded for that texture can be found towards the end of the tutorial.

I think you're experiencing the same problem I encountered with the Effects Maps not matching the colour map.

This can be fixed using the following steps:

- Open the 'Complex Brickwork.gtx' file in Genetica.
- Edit the "Make Bricks" Group node by clicking small 'Enter' button to the top-right of the node.
- Select the "Combine" node at the base of the node tree (if it isn't already selected).
- In the Properties panel, set the "Combine Effect Maps" property to "Yes". This will combine the two effect maps so they match the Color Map pattern.
- Exit out of the "Make Bricks" group by clicking the small 'Out' button at the base of the node tree.

If you re-render the Effects maps again they should have the same pattern as the Color map.

Don't forget to save the GTX file to preserve the modified settings.
