Someone recently asked me for advice on making eyes. I wanted to post my reply here so everyone can benefit.

In the attached texture I demonstrate how to "generalize" a texture so that you can quickly crank out a number of versions of the texture with very little editing work. Specifically I've run 4 inputs into the main group that can be tweaked to make different eyes.

Enjoy! :)

If you're doing animals, the look can usually be achieved simply by cranking up the pupil size. Here I show an owl eye. All I did to make this was change the colors and iris size--a 60 second edit.

Too cool. Eye's are something I had give up doing. :good:
This should also show or give me some ideas for radial textures. ;)

And there was me thinking it was a silly question, so I didn't post it here ;)

Thanks Atlas - that is amazing. I just knew I could do more interesting stuff in Genetica than the long, slow PS way and you've proved it. The results are incredible, I'm going to have so much fun with this.

Crystal snake-eyes anyone?

Here are a couple tweaks I made to my original texture to give it a feline feel. From what I see of snake eyes, their eyes are very similar to cats, so this could be useful.

Another enhanced eye ball texture. The iris colors and pupal can be changed through the reference nodes just like in Atlas' original GTX but the iris pattern has to be modified through the iris color stack but it should not be a big issue though. I am trying to shoot for realism here. ;)

I still have an idea for a crystal snake eye and it will come later on.

I've never played Resident Evil, manleystanley, but your eye reminds me of things I've seen in Asian animation. Neat!

Sethren, I think you've definitely managed to take the realism up a notch. You managed to get your eye to look realistic far away as well as close up, and that's something I was struggling with.

Add a slight green tint to the black portion of the eye and that window reflection would make it look like eye has a contact.
